Why cow milk not taxed but almond milk taxed :(

To explain: Milk + most milk products are considered basic groceries, which aren't taxed GST/HST in Canada. However, non-dairy milks and products don't count. So lactose intolerant folks, or anyone choosing alts for any other reason, pay extra taxes on top of premium prices. :)))

While they are both called "milk" they have nothing in common other than color.

What they have in common: They are food staples used for practically identical purposes.

But their components and manufacturing processes are not the same. I am not an expert in agriculture but i know almonds compete with crops for land to be planted on but cows do not. I expect the reason is related to manufacturing process, not end user applications.

Lol, no. "The supply of basic groceries, which includes most supplies of food and beverages marketed for human consumption, is zero-rated." Excludes things like candy and soda. Nothing to do with land, just basic human needs. Which, for many, is non-dairy. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/4-3/basic-groceries.html …
