Why cow milk not taxed but almond milk taxed :(

To explain: Milk + most milk products are considered basic groceries, which aren't taxed GST/HST in Canada. However, non-dairy milks and products don't count. So lactose intolerant folks, or anyone choosing alts for any other reason, pay extra taxes on top of premium prices. :)))

wait really I never actually looked at the tax part before wtf so on top of the extra $2 paid for it not being real milk theres extra tax as well?

Not "extra" tax as in additional taxes, but it is taxed at the normal GST/HST rates, while dairy products aren't due to being classified as basic groceries. Unfortunate that milk alternatives aren't considered basic groceries, as they're a necessity for a lot of people.

You think that's bad. In the E.U. they brought in a tampon tax as it was considered a non essential item. Only a man could think such a thing! Fortunately when the U.K left we abolished it.
