Or because there are plenty of people who don't want to live in fear, don't want to live carrying around a gun, don't like guns... Don't want to have to think about whether or not they might be in a fight for their lives every time they leave the house. How awful that would be.

That "reality" of mass shootings that have recently been on an upward trend is due to weak outdated laws and certain guns citizens shouldn't have access to. So many countries don't have this "reality" or these shootings and those people do just fine. Which, again, is the point.
