ANY surgery has the potential to cause issues, but elective or not, most don't have issues, (people or animals), after it's done. Spaying & neutering is also lopping off a piece of anatomy for the sake of humans. We don't frown on it. Those can also cause issues btw.

Spaying (not sure about neutering) is actually very good for their health as it decreases cancers in that area by a laaaarge margin - like 80% or something.

Sure, but we both know that's not why it's done. It's population control.

Which is also a good reason - for the cats as well. It's all a win.

Not really. It's to make humans feel better that slightly fewer animals are suffering because we can't control our own population.

This could go a long ways, and I'm not going to repeat what's already been written in public studies. The short end of it is that they live much healthier lives when spayed. Any other agenda - real or not - is irrelevant because the cats directly benefit.

I'm not saying they don't. I firmly believe in spaying and neutering pets. I'm simply saying it's another physical alteration that is ultimately done for humans. Pretty much anything for animals circles around to how it can best benefit humans.

There is zero benefit to the animals from declawing or snipping ears or clipping tails. Those are purely for us and they have nothing to gain, only risks.

Zero benefit in most cases, yes. There are always cases of damage where it's best to remove the part. Chaz used to scratch excessively. Then he'd chew his feet trying to pull out whatever he got stuck in his claws. Lucy is easily scared & nail trims/caps were a nightmare.

Declawing solved all the problems. I'd already spent a few thousand dollars trying not to do it. It shouldn't be a default, but I don't think it should be outlawed either.

Hey, it's truly great that your cats didn't have the medical complications 80% of declawed cats have, or behavioral issues 1/3 get.
That doesn't mean old practices that were the norm 15-30 years ago are okay or humane. Especially with what we know now.
