🐈 CAT PEOPLE 🐈 WHAT BREED IS SHE??? This is a stray that was taken into a shelter and is ready to adopt or foster. I love her and want her, but I'd like to know more about her possible temperament and health, and since she was a stray before, they had little info on her :)pic.twitter.com/nxXtFcdjEk

from my professional opinion (10 years a vet tech) we’ll usually just label these DSH’s (domestic shorthairs). At minimum they should have performed an FELV/FIV test, and fecal test to check for intestinal parasites. (1/2)

Other than that, even the more anti-social/feral strays can become lap kitties, but some will require more work than others. As a general recommendation, if the cat is cleared of any health issues at a vet, HIGHLY recommend not waiting on getting pet insurance (2/2)

It was nothing to do with insurance or immediate health concerns :) Possible breed lifespan information, or common health issues down the line, and my main worry is that she won't respond well to holding or leash training. I definitely want to leash train my next kitty

oh no, its just force of habit for me to tell pet owners to consider pet insurance haha. Reason I say FELV/FIV testing, is those cats that are positive can still be adopted out, and they can live healthy lives, but it may compromise them when they're older.

but in general, domestic shorthairs, american shorthairs, tabbies or any cat in general, the most common health issue we see down the line is chronic kidney issues, which can occur as an adult or senior.

and i will be thoroughly impressed if you can leash the kitty if you do adopt! I've seen only a handful over the years that tolerate it well :P
