Wonderful to hear that India’s Supreme Court has thrown out #Section377, an outdated law which made being in a same-sex relationship a crime. Congratulations to all the LGBTQ advocates who fought to make this a reality!

It was a colonial era law ie it was brought in and imposed by the British in 1861. Giving the full text below "Unnatural offences: Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished

with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine" It was not really imposed but used by neighbours etc to intimidate and blackmail LGBT ppl. They will be arrested ( and released) but

it is still harassment and a threat to individual dignity right? Plus having a law made the people feel like criminals in their own country, it also meant same sex wedding was not legalized n same sex couples were not considered eligible for adoption, surrogacy, inheritance etc

There are too many assumptions here to begin with. Before we can say that the law trampled human dignity and it caused things like same sex marriage to be unrecognized we’d first have to find out if same sex actions are dignified and good.

As the Supreme Court said, constitutional morality is paramount. Anything that violates it should not be welcome in Indian society. Especially if it's a law enacted by colonialists based on an immature reading of a sacred text.
