A personal aside: Snodgrassella wkB2 was the second bee gut symbiont I isolated way back in 2011. It was so innocent... Now you've turned it into a mighty virus-mite killing cyborg and I find that quite amusing 😁

Intriguing results from Kirsten Ellegaard et al.--Maybe human management has altered the microbiome of the western honey bee, increasing the strain diversity through frequent mixing of colonies.

I love this video -- yes reduced genome endosymbionts are everywhere in nature.

More experimental evidence that caterpillars don't rely on gut microbes for development, from Deepa Agashe's group. It's cool to see this being repeatedly confirmed by multiple researchers with different taxa

Wonderful work from et al. in the Keeling lab. It's a good read -- a nicely written narrative describing surprising discoveries about an unknown, very widespread eukaryotic symbiont of corals. Plus the video!

Lovely black-tailed Uroleucon! I wonder what is the host plant (Asteraceae)? Breech birth is normal in aphids...

We hope this helps others work on the bee as a system for answering questions about gut microbiota. Lots of unanswered questions, including ones we have not thought of! (and it's Hao Zheng, not Zeng)
