NEW: Anti-racism campaigners are calling for the royals to lose their exemption under race equality law & be “brought into line with the rest of the public sector” following Meghan & Harry’s racism allegations. @ppvernon @AntiRacismDay @ukblmhttps://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/meghan-harry-royal-family-racism-oprah-b1815242.html …

The Equality Act, introduced in 2010,  protects people from discrimination within the workplace and across wider society.

Orgs within the public sector have an obligation to adhere to this legislation, from the govt and charities to major companies and political parties. However, the royal household, which is funded by the taxpayer through the sovereign grant, is exempt from those rules.

"(...) Meghan had at least 3 protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act where she experienced discrimination as a pregnant, mixed-race woman with mental health problems. If she'd was working for the NHS/Met, she'd have the right to take forward action." - @ppvernon

This is horrible and unbelievable. Why are they exempt they have employees just like any other firm. If they call themselves the firm then they should adhere to the regulations.

Why on earth was the taxpayer-funded BRF ever granted an exemption from the Equality Act? Oh, never mind. We all know why. And it’s appalling to have granted them such an exemption which is essentially a license to discriminate. #HarryandMeghan

Why they're exempt in the first place?

If they were granted an exemption from laws about racism, it's clearly because they are known to be racist and it was felt to be tolerable. There's no other reasonable explanation.
