The world is an ever less hospitable place for Syrians. Inside Syria, in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan--it's harder and harder for Syrians to get by. But the places to which they flee are often more hostile still, leaving them stuck in purgatory. from

It’s time for officials on both sides of the Channel to admit that their policies have failed spectacularly, instead inflicting enormous suffering. Yesterday's tragedy should be a turning point for France and the UK. My take:

Fun news that Priti Patel has been disinvited to a meeting about the "refugee crisis" (ps it's not a crisis, can we stop using that term in Europe, please). Here's an idea: why not invite someone who is willing to risk their lives to cross the Channel?

"This tragedy has to be the end of the story... We have to offer people alternatives to the smugglers' boats." Brilliant and straight talking truth to power from on the completely foreseeable and unavoidable 27 deaths in the Channel.

In wake of tragedy yesterday, when at least 27 people died off the French coast attempting to reach the UK, politicians on both sides are thundering about evil smuggling networks & deterrence & patrols…it’s unseemly. It's also bad policy. That stuff doesn’t work. Obviously.

Devastated to hear that at least 31 asylum seekers have died today crossing the Channel. Far from making the route unviable the will only lead to more deaths & suffering. A truly Great Britain is one that provides safety to those in need
