In many parts of the US black communities were pushed to low-lying flood prone areas. In Miami, the opposite is true. Black communities were built on high elevation away from the coast. Now because of sea level rise that high land is in demand. (THREAD)

President Trump has printed out remarks infront of him but he’s barely using them. This is mainly a stream of consciousness, an airing out of his feelings after months of dealing with impeachment.

I went on to talk about and why black people can’t just “get over slavery.” Thank you, , for having me on.

As a kid of 80s Miami, I grew up hearing about the police brutality surrounding Mr. McDuffie's story, but nothing about the man himself or his family. Thank you for this.

  6. There's a lot of info about the McDuffie riots that followed Arthur McDuffie's death, not much in the way of a profile of the man who was killed. His nickname was Bubba. He was a musician and music lover. His sister calls him the big hearted one who looked out for everyone

  7. Arthur McDuffie's best friend Lonnie got choked up at the ceremony. They went to school together and served in the Marine Corps together. He said McDuffie's story should always be kept alive in Miami's memory.

  8. McDuffie's older sisters flew into Miami from Georgia to attend the intimate ancestor remembrace ceremony. They said it was hard to return to the city where their brother Arthur McDuffie was killed.

  9. Marc is Arthur McDuffie's son. He was a 1 year old toddler when his dad was killed by the police. Just a few hours before the NFL ran an ad about police violence against black men, he talked at the ceremony about the police violence that killed his dad 40 years ago.

  10. Arrests were made, but 5 months after McDuffie's funeral the white officers were acquitted. That sparked the McDuffie riots also knows as the Miami race riots of 1980.

  11. Arthur McDuffie was a respected & popular insurance agent in Miami. After he ran a red light on his motorcycle in 1979, he was brutally beaten into a coma by police. Officers immediately tried to cover up their crime by staging the scene as an accident. He died a few days later

  12. While most of Miami-Dade was getting ready for the Super Bowl, a small ceremony honored the family of Arthur McDuffie. McDuffie was beaten to death by white Miami-Dade officers 40 years ago. (THREAD)

Tracy, Trayvon Martin's dad, said watching his son grow was a blessing that was cut short. He let Trayvon drive on the highway for the first time a few months before he was killed.

Sybrina, Trayvon's mom, said one of her favorite moments that she replays is calling her son to hand her the remote when it was within arm's reach. He would get it and tell her, "Ma! I can't believe you." And they laughed every time.

Today is Trayvon Martin's birthday. He would have turned 25. I talked to his mom and dad for this non-narrated radio story a few years ago about his life, their grief and activism. "Trayvon lives on through us," they said.
