That's just the official bullshit, brought to you by people who a short time before were saying masks were worthless. Really masks work both ways: they filter incoming air as well as outgoing air.

No, it's coming from @zeynep who was also among the most vocal that masks were not worthless.

She's worthy of respect, but I don't think she's ever explicitly said that masks don't filter on the way in, and it's such a silly thing to say that she probably wouldn't ever. Filtering on the way in is still helping with disease transmission.

The entire point is that they need to be filtering *on the way out* as well. That's the key point that makes them useful.

They're more useful if they filter on the way out too, but filtering on the way in isn't "not helping at all", which is the language I objected to.

Not helping at all *for the reason we need people wearing masks now* which is to stop the spread. They are useful if you're dealing with saw dust in your home. So, sure, they're "helpful." But for what people out and about need today, they are not useful.

Stopping the spread to the person wearing them is still stopping the spread. It doesn't protect you from him, so admonish him for selfishness if you wish, but don't pretend his mask isn't helping with the epidemic at all.

I wear valved respirators because they're easier to breathe with. They're selfish, I get that. My response if someone complained to me about the valve would be to recommend they wear a respirator too. If 100% of people wore valved respitators would the issue go away?

Yes, but there aren't enough valved N95s for everyone. You can still do as some doctors do and wear an ordinary mask over the valve to filter exhalations.

I didn't struggle to get my respirators - as long as you're comfortable with the comparable KN95 standard there is plenty of stock. I do accept your point though, stocks are generally low.

It's hard to tell, though, whether one really has a good mask or whether it's a scam. Nothing wrong with the KN95 standard, but there are a lot of scammers in the world, and a lot of factories that have suddenly entered the business.

Of course nothing will replace proper testing. A simple test I conduct at home, though, is to spray them with deodorant in sunlight. Does it allow the aerosolised droplets through? You've been duped, open a dispute. Be sure to order on a site where you can open a dispute.
