I'm old enough to remember when the "scientific consensus" among all western health authorities was that ordinary citizens should NOT wear masks as an anti-COVID measure.https://twitter.com/Deus_Abscondis/status/1254286832704958465 …

Wearing a mask (or one of those tube things I wear to protect me from the sun) keeps you from touching your face with your bare (possibly infected) hands. Wearing a mask & disposable gloves @ the grocery store offers very good prevention.

I was in the supermarket in the UK the other day, and a guy wearing a mask and disposable gloves, after handling everything as he normally would, reached up, moved his mask and wiped his nose with the aforementioned disposable gloves

While facepalmingly dumb, without proper training, wearing such PPE without proper training can give a false sense of security. Sometimes better to reinforce a simpler message (don't touch your face) than add complexity to a problem

Gee, like an instruction pamphlet or online training movie on YouTube or information slot on TV is so difficult? Come on now.

Don't underestimate (1) how hard it is to use a mask and not screw up - especially in cultures where use is rare - and (2) how hard it is to get even a simple message to a wide audience. A YouTube vid won't cut it even if pewdiepie did it

again, you seem to be mainly focusing on benefit to wearer, as opposed to benefit to third parties. Even if a wearer sometimes lapses - thus forfeiting protection to himself, his transmission to third parties will be reduced in some measure, thus reducing R.

Of course it benefits the wearer. Masks don't magically filter on the way out and not on the way in. Indeed, exhaling (and especially coughing) lifts the mask off the face, while inhaling sucks it tighter.
