And it does... precisely nothing for your cold, since interferon is a protein which you digest into amino acids rather than absorb intact?

Studies show that it does work. Trick is,a medication that one eats passes through stomach acid where proteins get destroyed,but here interferon is produced in intestine. Not sure about adsorption,probably poor,but enough is produced to take effect

Sounds like you're saying the bacteria multiply in the colon like most gut bacteria do. But the colon doesn't absorb stuff, unless it's water or a fat-soluble molecule like butyrate. Even the rest of the intestines don't absorb undigested proteins.
