I highly recommend this paper: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/php.12093 … One interesting point is that UV germicidal lamps were commonly used 1940-60 but the occasional eye injury made them fell out of favour compared to disinfectants.

And while they make assertions about it being eye safe, they provide zero proof. Okay, it won't get to the lens, but the cornea is another matter.

true! so I def keeping putting 'safe' in inverted commas. As there is a flux and dosage limit that clearly would be dangerous even with 222nm. It might just be a 'safer' method...

I suspect that the power density thing is an honest mistake and someone just typed mJ instead of mW. The numbers seem sensible with that correction. Embarrassing, but shit happens. Bit surprised it hasn’t been fixed in the edited version, though.

0.0062 mW for seven hours does add up to 157 mJ, so that indeed seems to be the proper interpretation, but the 0.0008 mJ/cm^2 (or mW/cm^2) figure for the conventional lamp is still puzzling.
