Tesla getting more serious about its solar roofs as promised. I just got promo: "get $500 off your solar system if you purchase in cash and install by March 3."

hmmm. well. I'll let you know when they start installation on that roof I ordered two years ago.

That's why I didn't order a Tesla roof two years ago myself. It didn't seem like they were in any position to actually deliver. This special offer is supposedly just in my neighborhood, it's hard to say whether that is geotargeted marketing or real geographic limitation.

I think they've had a ton of trouble with the details of the shingles. And other internal corporate issues of the Solar City merger. But in my case, the biggest problem is a giant game of telephone between the 'designers' and the sales contacts.

We're still trying to get a 'installation design' that makes any sense for my roof, or really, is for the correct roof at all. But I can't talk to these designers, the information flow is all compartmentalized with multiple delays at each step.

It seems there are even more restrictions on how and where they can place the shingles compared to traditional large panels. My roof is huge, but I have two skylights. As a result... there's nowhere with enough 'standoff' they can put the shingles. So they say.

Wait, these "shingles" need "standoff"? So they don't actually serve the function of actual shingles? (Mechanical, UV, and water protection) They're basically just normal solar panels, but smaller?

I was told only that the active photovoltaic shingle regions (as opposed to the ones that are just glass) require a decently large standoff. I don't know if it's because of the shingles, the interconnects, or some other thing.

Oh, and by standoff, they didn't mean 'distance away from the roof deck surface', they meant 'lateral distance from other features on the roof' like chimneys, dormers, skylights.

Ah, okay, that's what I'd misunderstood.
