Wait, these "shingles" need "standoff"? So they don't actually serve the function of actual shingles? (Mechanical, UV, and water protection) They're basically just normal solar panels, but smaller?

I was told only that the active photovoltaic shingle regions (as opposed to the ones that are just glass) require a decently large standoff. I don't know if it's because of the shingles, the interconnects, or some other thing.

Oh, and by standoff, they didn't mean 'distance away from the roof deck surface', they meant 'lateral distance from other features on the roof' like chimneys, dormers, skylights.
