Great thread! For a comprehensive look at the topic see this report from
@ciel_tweets. https://www.ciel.org/plasticandclimate/ … They do an excellent job of explaining why it is so critical we halt the expansion of new plastic production infrastructure, and reduce the use of plastic.1 reply 2 retweets 9 likes -
It doesn't make sense to compare the situations of "plastic" vs. "less/no plastic" but rather "plastic" vs. "what they would be replaced with", right ? e.g., replacing plastic bottles by glass bottles is a net waste of CO2

Are you comparing single use plastic to single use or re-used or recycled glass in this case ? Can you provide references and quantitative integrated assessments of avoided emissions when plastics are replacing other materials (global scale)?

Replying to @valmasdel @nbonneel and
in many applications, plastic is a replacement for metal. In plumbing fixtures (based on very recent renovation), modern plastic fixtures are much, much easier to install than metal fixtures, probably save energy relative to metal fixtures. Same would be true in cars.

Indeed, car manufacturers have even figured this out. Bumpers, for instance, are normally plastic, and have been for years.
