Well. I can't tell if this is throwing good money after bad, or just weird money after OCD. But I need a differential voltage probe and a current probe if I want to continue down this ESD rabbit hole. I think there's some real need to Just Fix It.

One way to try to tame the ESD would be to put a big capacitor between thermistor signal and ground. The thermistor is a very slow sensor; killing everything above (say) 1 kHz wouldn't hurt the printer.

The issue isn't a noisy thermistor--- the pulse was coupling so much charge that ground itself was bouncing up several volts before anything else could catch up, causing the Atmega to spontaneously reset.

Maybe you need common mode protection, then, too: perhaps take the pair of thermistor wires and run them through a toroidal core several times. But differential mode protection (the big capacitor) still seems indicated.

This specific issue was adequately fixed by shielding. FWIW, the thermistor input is already protected by multiple ESD diodes and capacitors. My guess is the ESD protection simply overwhelmed the ground sink capacity.

We do want to be able to put all that energy somewhere and not bottle it up as it'll pop out somewhere else. Signal ground was just apparently not a big enough place.

How would it "pop out somewhere else"? This isn't a lightning bolt, where the electrons _will_ get through no matter what. The thermistor wiring isn't even the thing getting directly zapped, it's just next to it and has some charge induced.

Well, it's a tiny little lightning bolt :-) The energy transfer has to be damped out/sunk somewhere. Mostly, I'd rather it go into a 24V rail with a 100uF cap on it and/or to earth ground because that's easy.

Ie, shielding the thermistor lead is more straightforward than modding the Einsy or making an inline filter. The LCD board though, I think that's going to need an interstitial filter.
