I've been pondering the video of green laser pointers supposedly bringing down a drone in HK recently. They don't do anything as far as the radio control. There are many armchair generals out there with their theories. Best answer I've seen is from reddit user Kronendal...

Some cpu boards can be fried by focusing a laser on a diode, and an led is just a diode. Instead of taking in 3.3v to light up the led it is now - because of the lasers - outputting 30v back into the circuit, a few pops and the smell of fried plastic later... down goes the drone.

I'm afraid that doesn't pass the sniff test. Diodes don't put out more voltage with more light. They can source more current, but that won't do the same thing. And LEDs are pretty bad at running in reverse. And the descent looked controlled, so not a board failure.

the closest thing I can think of to what's described here is the issue with WLCSPs where photoelectric effect can disrupt their operation, widely known recently as the Raspberry Pi photoflash issue. not sure if a laser pointer is enough to trigger that

google "wlcsp light sensitivity", tons of info from different vendors

Ok...in HK they were using run of the mill green laser pointers, I mean there could've been someone with IR but I doubt it

there are no mass-produced green semiconductor lasers; all those green pointers are DPSSFD and use a powerful IR laser whose light is processed by special crystals that eventually emit green light it is common for cheap green pointers to leak a lot of IR, often dangerously so

There actually are green laser diodes now, e.g.: https://sites.google.com/site/dtrslasershop/home/diodes/sharp-505nm-35mw-green-laser-diodes … Not common, nor cheap, and strangely high driving voltages, but they do exist.

yeah, that's what I meant by "mass-produced". in the sense that you can get a box of them off ebay for spare change.
