Buy vs build is often old vs young. Youth is sure that it can build the best thing. Over time, bad experience lowers confidence and the drive is replaced with "can't get fired for buying IBM."
It's not just that older people know their limits better. It's also that the young have more years in their future over which to amortize the value of lessons learned in even a failed attempt to build something.

I hold the opposite view. Focus narrowly at maximizing income when you're young and spend time failing creatively later. I know it's ass-backwards though
