Here is Ben Brantley's response to the conversation surrounding his review of "Head Over Heels" https://nyti.ms/2NP9xat . We are updating the review to reflect some of our readers' concerns now.pic.twitter.com/3SjcC1qAuk

Something an editor should have caught, but there you go...

Odds are the editor probabily had also seen to show or was familiar enough to see the reference to a line from the show. He didn’t foresee readers who were unfamiliar. (Good rule of thumb is assume your readers have no clue about what you are writing about)

@nytimestheater @nytimes can you explain how the original review passed through multiple people and not one of them felt the need to edit it? Ben Brantley was in the wrong when he wrote it but you as a publication are in the wrong for allowing it to be published

“I’m sorry for referencing the show I’m assuming, by writing a review of it, you haven’t yet seen” is how that comes across

Boo times two. Who edited this? Did no one realize this was offensive? It's not criticism unless it's intelligent. @NYTimes time for a new reviewer.

Brantley is a jaded old hasbeen, and as such shouldn't be taken too seriously. Hand over the reigns to someone with a fresh pair of ears and a sense of what clicks nowadays. To the point, @HOHmusical is a pure delight. Loved every second of it.
