Sitting on the Eurostar speeding from Paris to London on this dank, midwinter, Brexit day. A journey taken hundreds of times these past 20 years is, accordingly, familiar and uneventful. Feels strange that after today, for us Europeans, nothing changes and everything changes.

By unhappy coincidence, today’s the day the UK sets off in its yellow submarine of magical thinking & the day the US Senate is likely to acquit Trump on the basis that he can do whatever he wants. How rapidly two great democracies have degenerated.

The cruel, unadorned, straightforward misogyny of this administration, its explicit glee in humiliating women (reporters, ambassadors, you name it), makes me feel numb.

This letter to Pompeo from 5 senators: “At a time when journalists around the world are being jailed for their reporting—and as in the case of Jamal Khashoggi, killed—your insulting and contemptuous comments are beneath the office of the Sec of State.”

I wonder if realizes that getting a well-deserved reputation for not telling the truth really undermines one's ability to get other states to believe anything one might say, and makes it harder to persuade them to trust you or cooperate in important ways.

Pompeo runs Trump close in turpitude and grossness. Sometimes I think he may actually be worse. Then I think, nah. Still. How he looks himself in the mirror I don’t know.
