Totally disagree. The key element is contrast: the utter opposites of tart, crisp, juicy apple and treacly, gooey, buttery caramel. In other beloved foods, it's also the contrast we love: ice cream cones, taquitos, poutine, spring rolls . . .

Counterpoint: When I worked at a farmstand in high school, the caramel apple proved a PERFECT lunch. Enough sugar to get me pumped and enough fiber to keep me alive. (Everything else at Idywilde Farms was too expensive for a teenager to buy for lunch.)
