Party wisdom dictates that only Democrats like Joe Manchin can win states like West Virginia. But Manchin's Kavanaugh vote should call old party strategies into question, writes @onesarahjoneshttps://nym.ag/2PkZ1ZL

Many self-described progressives want to turf #JoeManchin because he is relatively conservative and #Democrats can supposedly do better. Here’s the case for that by Sarah Jones. It’s a bad analysis. |1 #wvpolitics #kavanaughhttp://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/10/red-state-democrats-can-do-better-than-joe-manchin.html …

The underlying article of faith is perhaps best exemplified recently by #BernieSanders’ “Revolution”. There’s no evidence that the masses are yearning for a leftist economic agenda, but Berners claim that the whole country would unite behind one, if offered. |2 #joemanchin #wvpol

#Geography exists as a field of study because the Earth is not uniform. It varies from place to place. The natural landscape varies; the human landscape varies. (And they interact.) The idea that “progressivism” can be equally successful everywhere is contradicted by reality. |3

When Jones says the #Democratic Party’s “big tent might just be too big”, does she want to win Congress or not? With #JoeManchin as a #Democrat, the party has a greater chance to control the #Senate — and its agenda, its committees, and the confirmation process. |4 #wvpolitics

To support her case for #progressive success, Jones cites primary results. Such results are not relevant to a general election. Primary electorates are small and -at best- represent one side of the spectrum. The out party in a one-party-dominant state can be -more- extreme. |5

But if real #progressive policies will drive massive turnout, then that -would- apply to the primaries. And yet #Bernie didn’t win. In fact, higher turnout often meant he did worse. (He actually lost two primaries where he’d earlier won caucuses.) |6http://otford.tumblr.com/post/149535074888/clinton-versus-sanders-corrected-tally …

And #BernieSanders’ success in the WV primaries is particularly suspect as a data point. It’s clear that WV contains a lot of legacy Democrats who are conservative; they supported Bernie over Hillary, but Hillary over Obama. They were voting against, not voting for. Guess why. |7

When Jones discusses WV, she emphasizes all the registered voters who -didn’t- vote for #Trump; originally she didn’t even note his huge margin among those who voted. But does she do the same for the progressives she’s touting? How many people -aren’t- voting for #BetoORourke? |8

How marvelous would it be if Dems wrote in a candidate and that candidate won?
