My very subjective take is that Edward P. Jones has already transcended his age as an "all time great." The rest, wonderful, but we shall see. I do think, though (for reasons atached above) that Franzen is a product of his time and will not exceed it.
Eh? Not many have heard of him. How come he is all-time great? Franzen is a far bigger name and a better writer.
Franzen is currently more well known but I think Jones is a great writer, Franzen a good one, but limited.
Limited by what? Jones is hardly in Franzen's class. He is a moderately talented writer at best - limited by writing about race.
In absolute disagreement, but will close with two points. Your assumption that Jones "writes about race" in writing about his own milieu is as off the mark as dismissing Joyce since his writing focuses on the Caucasian Irish of Dublin. 1/2
But Jones does write about race. It is unfortunate how many non-White writers often end up pigeonholing themselves. Many P.O.C writers have written against this. Yes, but Joyce's theme wasn't race.
You reveal yourself here more than anything you might say about Jones. In the U.S. you would likely be protesting "identity politics" and stating that "you don't see race."
not one crime fiction ... some of the best literature, especially books by Philip Kerr (recently lost to us) Berlin Trilogy for sure.
