Office of the Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams’s Tweets

The Public Advocate on #JordanNeely: I'm concerned we have a Mayor who's yet to say that vigilantism is not what we want. I'm also concerned we have a Governor who hasn't made those types of statements...Our executives are creating an environment where these things can continue.

"You want people to be safe and feel safe. We have to say, you can't choke people to death on the train. And that doesn't seem to be coming from our top executive leaders and that's very concerning to me." @JumaaneWilliams and @IamNotAcop_Jill join to discuss Jordan Neely death:

We're celebrating a win this week, made possible by the people-powered climate movement for a #JustTransition away from fossil fuels. The #BuildPublicRenewables Act will help NY meet the scale of the climate catastrophe, bringing green union jobs and #PublicPower to our state.

Read the Public Advocate's statement on the New York State budget: "The second budget of this governor’s tenure is over a month late – a disregard for deadline that is disconnected from the needs of New Yorkers – like much of the budget it produced." [1/2]

It took a month to remove all housing support from the budget – whether the production of deeply affordable housing in collaboration with communities, or the essential counterpart of tenant protections to keep New Yorkers in those homes, even as extreme rent hikes are still being considered."

"It took a month to convince the governor not to lift the cap on charter schools, which would pull vital funds from the traditional public school system, and even a month later, the governor insisted on reviving zombie charters.

There are some positives in this budget, including climate and transportation investments."

STATEMENT: The Public Advocate calls for charges in Jordan Neely's killing. "Justice must be done...more broadly, we must address the city’s homeless and mental health crises with an approach that centers compassion and support– treating people as people, not as problems." [1/2]

NYC PUBLIC ADVOCATE CALLS FOR CHARGES IN JORDAN NEELY'S KILLING

"Jordan Neely’s death was a homicide, and charges must be immediately brought against his killer. To say anything else is an equivocation that will only further a narrative that devalues the life of a Black, homeless man with mental health challenges and encourages an attitude of dehumanization of New Yorkers in greatest need."
Office of the Public Statement graphic with blue background, yellow accents, and text:
"An environment has long been created by media and elected officials that encourages fear of and violence against people who are struggling, that paints them as a threat to public safety. But being homeless is not a capital crime. Struggling with mental health is not a capital crime. Being Black is not a capital crime.
Office of the Public Statement graphic with blue background, yellow accents, and text:

"Justice must be done in this case, and more broadly, we must address the city’s homeless and mental health crises with an approach that centers compassion and support– treating people as people, not as problems. Otherwise, trauma will compound trauma, fear compound fear, and violence compound senseless, heart-wrenching violence."

The Rent Guidelines Board's preliminary vote last night represented a dereliction of duty, an attack on tenants by an industry that routinely puts profit over people. Tenant power has never been more necessary. NYC, the #RGB needs to hear from you: rentguidelinesboard.cityofnewyork.us/meetings
The Public Advocate emphatically speaks into a megaphone mic, as CASA Bronx members gather around him. Many hold signs with messages like "The rent is too damn high."
Council Member Joseph holds a sign reading "30.1%
Council Member Sanchez and the Public Advocate listen in the crowd. An advocate holds a sign reading, "Don't agonize, organize! Build tenant power."
A young advocate wearing a pink bandana holds a megaphone for an elderly Asian American tenant organizer, as CASA members listen.

"I fear that until our executives govern not simply by headline, as the governor admitted, or by donors, but by the need to invest in what working families truly need, we will remain stuck in a status quo that has never worked for most New Yorkers." [2/2]

We're dismayed by the decision to relocate West Side High School. But we're energized by the work to #SaveEARWestSide. As NYC works to address multiple social crises, our transfer schools must be invested in to provide creative solutions to student needs.

Read the Public Advocate's statement ahead of the Rent Guidelines Board preliminary vote. "Last year’s rent hike was already historic and horrific, contributing to the fact that half of all families in New York can’t afford the minimum cost of living in our city." #RGB

NYC PUBLIC ADVOCATE'S STATEMENT AHEAD OF THE RENT GUIDELINES BOARD PRELIMINARY VOTE

"Last year’s rent hike was already historic and horrific, contributing to the fact that half of all families in New York can’t afford the minimum cost of living in our city. Yet landlords are still pushing for an even more extreme increase, which will force even more families from their homes. "
Office of the Public Statement graphic with blue background, yellow accents, and text: "They attempt the same disingenuous argument every year, and I fear that with this administration’s appointees and priorities, the board will listen to them.

"Don’t be fooled by the strategy – if the board considers even a fraction of the absurd increase landlords are pushing, it would not be a compromise or a reasonable stance.
Office of the Public Statement graphic with blue background, yellow accents, and text: "It would be a devastating attack on New York’s tenants by an industry that routinely puts profit over people. The answer to any real financial struggles that some owners face cannot be demanding more money from tenants who don’t have it, which would only deepen the crisis."
Office of the Public Statement graphic with blue background, yellow accents, and text: "New York is the most expensive it’s ever been, and building conditions are deteriorating as rents continue to rise. Before even beginning a discussion about raising rents, we should be discussing how to hold bad landlords accountable for their repeated failures to maintain basic living standards, and how to protect tenants from dangerous conditions and costs."

Behemoth banks are recklessly leading us up to the edge of a financial crisis — similar to 2008. Deputy Public Advocate John Francis has joined to demand NYC and NY pass the People’s Bank Act & NY Public Banking Act; we can't be held hostage by these institutions.
Francis speaks at a rally in front of City Hall on a sunny day. Advocates hold signs with messages like "Pass the People's Bank Act."
