One of the "mere editorial errors" in this report was a claim that immigrants were convicted of nearly 70,000 sex offenses in a span of 6 years. Except the time span was 55 years, not six; and the data was for arrests, not convictions

The perverse effects of unrestrained market capitalism on the family and the individual soul, which so completely elude today’s capitalists, were readily apparent to the great champion of markets by *1776*.

Note just how dark Smith's assessment of the effects of capitalism on working class families in this passage is: he says that in times of severe economic crisis (greatly reducing demand for labor), capitalists will pay workers less than it takes to keep their families alive!

Here, Shapiro suggests that there's nothing inherent about capitalism which debases our values, invoking Smith's invisible hand.' Smith himself strongly disagreed: he argued that capitalism grinds workers into so lowly a dust they are unfit to partake in political life!

Woooooosh. Apparently, even if "The Fourteenth Amendment does not enact Mr. Herbert Spencer's Social Statics," a respect for liberty does.

Harvard Law grad seems to suggest that the government policing contractual relationships for unconscionability is part of a culture of dependency. (Really against a culture of government dependency? Hobbes's state of nature is for you!)

The (never fully stated) premise here seems to be that there's absolutely no causal arrow running from market forces to societal institutions, and that (subsidiary point) this was part of the ethos of a generation of intellectuals which devoured Adam Smith right off the presses.

Not that it says that much, but I walk away from this exchange convinced that Tucker Carlson is a more competent political theorist than Ben Shapiro.
