  1. A beautiful evening is expected tonight, with pleasant conditions tomorrow as well. A bit of smoke could filter into the upper atmosphere for Saturday but shouldn't result in air quality issues. Slight chances for rain arrive late Sat into Sun and again on Mon.

    On the topic of lacking severe weather, here is the latest Drought Monitor update. Areas SE of the Buffalo Ridge saw a one category improvement over the past week, while elsewhere saw no change.

    Here's an interesting tidbit for your Thursday morning: We have have issued the fewest number of Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings so far this year (since 2000). Looking back a little further, we have issued the 4th fewest (since 1986).

    Isolated showers and a rumble of thunder possible through early evening, mainly north of I-94. Otherwise, mild and dry into the weekend with precipitation chances increasing early next week.

    We're back in another predominately dry weather pattern for at least the next 7 days, with only some scattered showers possible today and Monday night. Though at least temperatures will be pleasant.

    A few scattered storms will be over the far northeast and east metro through 10 pm, in the St Croix River Valley along the MN-WI border. Lightning and gusty winds are expected as the storms move southeast.

    After a rewarding career in meteorology spanning 50 years, I will retire on Jan. 1. It has been my greatest honor to lead NWS for nearly 9 years. NWS has the most dedicated cadre of public servants, and I am proud to have served the Nation alongside them.
