Tonight's Climate Tidbit: Sioux Falls hit a high of 39° this afternoon! The last time we reached 39° here was Jan 27, 2023 and prior to that was December 28, 2022. What about 40° or higher? The last time that occurred was December 4, 2022 when we reached 41°!

Expect partly cloudy skies to prevail tonight with lows in the 20s. Otherwise, look for temperatures in the 30s to low 40s to continue through mid-week, with a chance of light snow/drizzle possible east of I-29 Monday afternoon!

Ready to feel temperatures reach or exceed the freezing mark? Excited to see melting snow and ice? This afternoon will be the first day since Friday the 27th of January (7 days ago) with readings above 32 degrees! Highs across the area this afternoon should reach 32-38°.

We know, we might be starting to sound like a broken record but folks - above normal temperatures are almost here! Downside will be the strong wind, leading to patchy blowing/drifting snow. But wind chills remain above zero!
Forecast for the next five days. Blustery to windy with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens and 20s. Dry weather with patchy blowing and drifting snow.

Watch out for fog to develop into Saturday morning. In some locations visibility may fall below a couple miles. In a few locations locally dense fog may be possible.

Temperatures continue to fall this evening. Many locations may see below zero overnight lows. Temperatures may begin to warm by daybreak, but winds will be on the increase. This will lead to very cold wind chills Friday morning.
Dangerous wind chills are expected.  Lowest values from -15 to -30 degrees, coldest in Southwest Minnesota and warmest near the Missouri River.  Wind chill advisories remain in effect into Friday morning for eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa.   Stay safe, and stay warm.

A cold night is on tap for the region, and this cold weather will persist through Friday. Wind chill values may fall below -20 in many locations! Good news though. Warmer weather is ahead!
With the breezy conditions expected to return Thursday and Friday, wind chill values are expected to be in the -20 to -30 range for most of the Tri-State area.  Use caution outdoors, pack a winter survival kit in your vehicle, and monitor your furnace for proper functionality.

Wind Chill Advisory in effect this evening and overnight for most areas east of I-29. Brisk north to northwest winds will produce wind chills as cold as 30 below zero. Dress in multiple layers if you must be outside for any amount of time. Travel with a Winter Safety kit.

The Groundhog saw his shadow this morning, so he predicts 6 more weeks of Winter. It seems reasonable to us at NWS Sioux Falls, with 17" snow depth, falling temps today, and a "warmer" weekend only reaching 30-35°. The NWS 3 Month outlook looks chilly for the Sioux Falls area.

Another good example of the near surface blowing/drifting snow issues that will be common across the area into the afternoon. Be prepared for changing conditions and keep your headlights on!

The winds have come up and the snow is blowing once again. Watch for areas of reduced visibility, especially where the snow is blowing off the top of some of the deeper cuts along the highways. Headlights on!

After another day of cooler temps, mild conditions return by the weekend boosting highs back into the 30s. Unfortunately before that, colder temps and breezy conditions will promote some wind chill concerns as quiet conditions continues.
Weather Outlook for tonight through Sunday. As breezy conditions return Thursday, some wind chill concerns will follow Thursday night. Otherwise, more mild conditions return this weekend as highs bounce back to the 30s.

2) Temps for January were dominated by warmer than normal days, but we all remember the chill at the end of the month. It was the 14th snowiest January, with most of the snowfall mid-month.

1) We're wrapping up January for Sioux Falls - in snow! ❄️ 2nd greatest January snow total (21.4") ❄️Greatest Jan 24-hour snowfall (12.2") ❄️ Two daily snowfall records on 2nd and 3rd Did we mention FOG? Reported on 25 days, 11 of which had dense fog!

We've been chilly of late, but in comparison to this forecast for Mount Washington, New Hampshire it doesn't seem so bad. Friday into Saturday, temperatures as cold as -38 and wind chills as low as -91 are forecast (with wind gusts as high as 110 mph).

It's another very cold morning across the area with temperatures in the single digits above to single digits below zero. There will be a decent recovery today as highs climb into the 20s!
