We have to talk about this Cochrane review of masking and handwashing that found “little to no evidence” masks (surgical & N95) reduce viral infections at the population level and some evidence that handwashing may help. Let’s dive in to understand why 1/ cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.10

I’m snippy about this b/c public health and infectious disease MD hubris has killed and disabled a lot of people globally. Started with the WHO refusing to say airborne and continues with thinly disguised droplet dogma today.

It was six years ago, and my mate, Pink, had just been told he was going to die. He accepted the news with a grace I can only marvel at, but he said he’d a list of things he’d still like to do.
We sat in a pub one night and read it over. Eight things? Four months? Ok. Deal.

I'm seeing that meta-analysis about class attendance going around, including pleas to use our scholarly training to make evidence-based decisions, which would include designing teaching policies based on "the science." Totally on board. I teach my stats students to do this. 1/7

Fun fact: The Public Service Commission is not an "independent" body. Staff there report to the Minister of Finance.
They are non-partisan, professional, talented, great people. (Full disclosure: I worked there.)
But they're not independent of government. They serve it. #ableg

Most of us at some time in our lives will suffer from a catastrophic health crisis which will make us feel isolated and afraid. But it is as if we want to believe that we live in a world of many healthy and well-functioning people. We do not.

Today is Thomas and Jude's birthday. Thomas is 9! He loves reading, video games, LEGO, and running everywhere.
Jude is forever 2. We still hear his laugh in ours and carry him with us in everything we do. He should have had a whole life ahead.
We miss you.🦁

We begin another year without Jude, in the middle of a rough flu season. We'd give anything to have him back.
If you get your #FluShot now you can develop immunity by Jan 16th, helping to protect your family and everyone around you. Please go.
I miss you.

The bottom-line/TLDR:
- Long-COVID is big & bad.
- We must stop covid transmission through airborne measures, supported test/trace/isolation, and let Air Scientist direct our strategy.
- We must radically change family med and our whole system.
- We must research & train up.

C. Ramp up research and training in long-COVID:
We need a massive federal/provincial/territorial investment in research in long-covid treatment and secondary prevention of associated conditions, and in structural/system innovation.

So what do we have to do?
A. Stop/slow SARS-CoV-2/Covid.
B. Change the way we work.
C. Ramp up research and training in long-COVID.
Read on for how we do these three things:

Some of you know that at the outset of the pandemic I emphasized the importance of historical thinking to navigate what was coming. Unfortunately, our response to a new virus has demonstrated a failure of science literacy, but also a complete inability to think historically. 1/5

The moral panic about AI & cheating is the same as the panic over proctoring & cheating is the same as the panic that led to plagiarism detection software.
People, the vast majority of students DO NOT want to cheat. They want to learn. The lack of trust undermines education.

Today was a typical December Saturday: wake, eat, mark, walk dog, mark, eat, play video games for a break, mark, walk dog, mark, eat. Now I’m just marked-out for the evening. So pleased that others handled the food prep. Time for some more video games and novels. #AcademicTwitter

Back in June, I help my mom clean out her pool shed. There's a strand of old twinkle lights with plastic flamingos. "Throw them out," she says. "They don't work." But I see that the flamingos came off easily, so I start to pull them off. "I can do something with these."

I got special permission from the warden to drop off a copy of the newspaper to Helen Naslund in prison so she could see the story.
I’m very grateful the request got approved, because Helen has no internet access and the printout I mailed won’t arrive for several days.

In a world that includes medically complex and palliative care pediatric patients, it should be stated as well that one persons somewhat benign experience with a virus is another child’s trip to the ICU. No amount of Tylenol weans a child off a vent. They need our support too.
