COVID-19 related deaths are notified to NSW Health from a range of sources and not all deaths reported by NSW Health occurred in the week in which they are reported as there is sometimes a delay between a death occurring and it being notified to NSW Health.

• There were 3 emergency department presentations for ‘influenza-like illness’ (ILI) requiring a hospital admission in the previous week. 4% of all ILI emergency department presentations required a hospital admission.

Other respiratory viruses summary • Flu activity is currently at low levels but flu vaccination continues to be recommended. • Of the 42,104 tests conducted for flu at sentinel laboratories, the proportion of positive tests remains low and stable below 1%.

• The timing of subsequent waves of COVID-19 infections will depend on a combination of factors, including the growth advantage of the virus, immunity levels in the population, and environmental and behavioural factors (e.g. social mixing, isolation when unwell).

To help reduce severe disease from Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariant infections, adults aged 50 to 64 are now recommended to receive a second booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, adults aged 30 to 49 years can also receive a second booster dose.

• BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants are currently the dominant (98%) strains.

Hospital admissions include people with COVID-19 who are admitted for other reasons. • There were 126 COVID-19 deaths reported this week. Of these, 25 (20%) had not received three doses of vaccine. Deaths may not have occurred in the week in which they were reported.

• The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has decreased by 5.5%. At the end of this week 1,821 people were hospitalised compared to 1,927 at the end of last week. There were 539 people with COVID-19 admitted to hospital and 56 people admitted to ICU this week.

• The number of PCR tests has decreased by 13%. The proportion of PCR tests that were positive for COVID-19 is stable at 11% this week compared to 12% at the end of the previous week.

COVID-19 Summary • The current wave of transmission in NSW, driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 COVID-19 subvariants, is in decline as evidenced by decreasing hospitalisations and PCR positivity. In the last week there was a decrease in the number of cases notified.
