My heart is bursting. On the eve of my first child's birth, my dad - who's been in prison nearly my entire life - was granted clemency. He never intended harm, yet his crime devastated many families. My heart breaks for the families that can never get their loved ones back.
Rehabilitation vs punishment is a philosophical question that will not be settled long after you and I are dead. As far as aiding and abetting, a getaway driver does enable a crime to occur much more than a witness that refuses to cooperate with police.

No question. There is culpability. They participated in a crime with a material risk of harm to others, and that harm happened. Maybe the son shouldn't have celebrated, but his feelings are understandable. And maybe 40 years for "felony murder" is an appropriate sentence.
