    China has now confirmed more than 17,000 cases of Wuhan coronavirus, with 2,829 new cases diagnosed on Monday alone. Last week, the country reported 4,400 cases.

    If you live in the U.S, your risk of contracting the new coronavirus identified in China is exceedingly low. But the flu is another story — it's very active, and more than 8,000 people have died from it this season in the U.S.

    Infectious disease experts say viruses like the new coronavirus don't survive long on surfaces — and there's no evidence from similar outbreaks that anyone got infected by handling a package. In other words, "it's not going to be transported on a box."

    JUST IN: The U.S. has declared coronavirus a public health emergency, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said. Azar said this allows the government to take temporary measures to contain the spread of the virus, which so far has been confirmed in six people in the U.S.
