I can't imagine a voting machine which doesn't have a paper trail. In fact, the paper trail SHOULD BE VISIBLE to the voter so that they can feel confident that nothing sneaky is going on. Not technologically impossible. Just ideologically undesirable. Can't cheat that way.

Just run the paper spool behind a plastic/glass window so it's visible for the voter, then when the voter leaves the booth, it advances forward so the next voter can't see it. Come on, this is 19th century technology here.
