Clinical trials for Alzheimer's in the U.S. are largely limited to fluent English speakers. That leaves millions of patients without the chance to participate — and scientists without diverse data.https://n.pr/2P2769t

the majority of people in the US speak english. they obviously couldn't accept ALL languages, so that means they'd have to pick and choose, which ends up becoming more exclusionary ("why'd you accept spanish but not german?"). i think the safest (and fairest) pick was english.

If you're in desperate need for patients for trials, you go by the next biggest language population. If language of patients is the main barrier to your science, it has a pretty obvious solution.

But it isn't that they're just excluding anyone who doesn't speak English, it's that this study requires an interpreter - and there aren't enough people in the field to do non-English interpreting. It's phrased as though it's discrimination, but it's really just a lack of ability

But even then, what should be "the next biggest language population"? Even if Spanish is the main non-English language spoken in the US, this is in MA, which has a comparatively low Hispanic population. So then would Italian or German be a better choice?

My point was that, even if they had the capability to interpret people of another language, they'd have to make those kinds of judgements, which are susceptible to prejudice.

Just saying: English is not the official language of America. We do not have a national language. If you want English as an official language, go to Singapore (it is the official language of that country).
