Critics are questioning whether it makes sense for SNAP to support the purchase of sugary soft drinks. But how, or whether, to nudge people toward healthier choices is contentious.https://n.pr/2SqqdrY

SNAP should purchase of hot foods like the deli roasted chickens. Makes no sense that isn’t allowed.

Yes this is one of the reasons I am against the micromanaging of food programs, as bureaucracies tend to not make decisions with logic.

Well the problem is they're in the 50's. They need to reevaluate what food is. It's processed crap that sadly makes up most crops. Corn syrup, soy everything, palm oil...etc. We can live without all that. Our farmers markets accept now & Coop offers discounts to those on stamps.

If the government's paying the bill, the government can decide what you purchase.

Do people without snap drink sugary drinks? Are we dictating what they drink? Just because those people are broke, doesn’t give us the authority to dictate what they can and cannot eat.

I decide what I eat, and what my kids eat. What’s the pattern? It’s my money. So if snap uses my money then I get a say in how it’s used. I won’t use my money to poison myself, my kids, or random strangers. If subsidizing poisoning is important to you, then use your money.

No you don’t have a say in how people eat even if it’s your money. That’s crazy.

I occasionally use SNAP and I agree that soda, chips, sweets, even processed foods should NOT be covered under it. What I’ve started doing at one point is paying for my occasional soda purchase separate, with cash. I believe other people should NOT pay for my bad eating habits.

I don't get why it would make someone a douche to use their snap benefits on bad food. It's not like they get extra money. If they choose to use it for a snack item, then why should it matter? Unless you're going to try and argue about paying for their healthcare

Health and healthcare is what’s really important for me. I was raised poor. So poor I barely ever had sweets. Everything was homemade & used to the last bit. I never even had soda till I moved to USA. I learned how to cook by 16 & believe natural foods = healthy, long life.

Folks who want to regulate what you buy on SNAP don’t seem to realize that many urban recipients live in food deserts where fresh choices aren’t readily available. Instead of treating them like lazy, stupid moochers make healthy choices easier for them to access.

When I first learned you can buy practically any kind of foodstuff with food stamps, I was surprised. There really should be a limit on what types of unhealthy crap is eligible. Not everyone will agree, and that’s ok.

Just as long as we hold similar control and standards to rich and powerful that get subsidies too tho... Or u only want to control poor?

So we want to feed poison to the poor? That’s the solution? We want to bow to the sugar lobby? To the massive corporations pedaling these sugar-laden products that contain zero nutritional value? I think only providing nutrition is a very fair and just way to look at it.
