Just in: A Pentagon official tells NPR that about 5,000 military support personnel will be deployed to the US-Mexico border. The official says the exact number “could be higher, could be lower.”

The uniformed troops will likely be active-duty Army, with perhaps some Army Reserve and Marines. They will be engineers, planners and military police. Pilots and aircraft will assist transporting CBP personnel.

What an extraordinary waste of resources and man hours! This is #GOP political grandstanding at its absolute worst -- solely meant to fire up the base to turn out for the midterms. Despicable! #VoteBlueToEndThisNightmare

We have 7000 men carrying the flags of their country headed to our border while chanting anti Trump slogans. This is an act of war. Do you want to just let 7000 violent thugs into your neighborhood?

Why? Just why? Half of the "caravan" have returned to their original countries, many have been offered asylum in Mexico, and the rest are still 2 months away on foot but heading to a a specific Port of Entry to apply for asylum legally here in US. So again, WHY?

Why? According to US law, all of those refugees have a right to claim asylum at a legal port of entry and have an opportunity to present their case before a judge. We cannot legally stop them from making that claim. Or does law and order no longer matter?

The regular workers will be quickly overwhelmed by the 1000+ people showing up all at once. They are being sent to provide assistance. Hopefully, that is what they actually do... assist.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying and hopefully it works out exactly that way. I remain skeptical. And I definitely don't think the army is the appropriate organization to send to help civilian workers process refugees.
