        What I get from this piece is that yes, the witness lied, but even without her testimony, the jury, blinded by racism or perhaps, helped along by racism, failed to convict Emmet's murderers.

        There is a statute of limitations on perjury in most jurisdictions. Carolyn Bryant committed a serious crime and she should have served a long prison sentence. She has brought shame upon her family and community.

        she should be punished. even now for lying under oath. but keep in mind the type of violence her husband and brothers were capable of. back then she had no protection from them either.
