No one had cell phones when I was in high school in 1999, and I'm from Ohio. Parents in the U.S. use it as a bargainning tool. These teens won't get off of them now. They limit face to face interaction and are not necessary, unless you need a job.

When I went to Kinshasa DRC in 2014 I asked the same question. Parents told me that they were fearful for their daughters. ie: Social media stalking, nude photos, revenge porn and things like that.
