The 36-year reign of Spain's 20th century dictator, Gen. Francisco Franco, was notorious for the imprisonment, torture and killings of those who spoke out against his regime.https://n.pr/2ytc2tH

Franco's remains should be put into a lead casket and sunken in a deep part of the ocean.

Franco left Spain destitute and irrelevant in the world. Nice tourist destinations, good-looking people. Watch out, USA.

Had the communists won Spain’s civil war, it would have been far worse.

No, France in the 1930's was the most progressive country in Europe. The republicans in Spain were after that model, but the nationalists were terrified of it.

Communism was the driving force on the so-called Republican side, and there was nothing progressive about it.

No, the communists made up a small part of the movement along with Anarchists, Socialists and just plain loyalists. They formed a voting block that defeated the religious conservatives and ushered in major changes such as women's right to vote.

Nope, the communists rose to be the dominant player on the Republican side. Besides which, when has communist involvement in anything ever ended well? The communists would never have continued to share power with any other factions.

Militarily they contributed the most, but not in government. They had a strong influence in France at the time and that was shrugged off. Russia was simply not strong enough to force their will on an unwilling European nation, especially one as independent as Spain.
