What a lot of people don’t get is how many people will euthanize their pets because they couldn’t afford them in the 1st place. people who put their animals down for FRACTURES and don’t bother doing care credit, monthlies, etc. vets aren’t doing it for the money, promise u that.

There's also a shocking number of rich people who'll put animals down bc they consider any vet cost a waste. My mom's practiced vet medicine for 30+ years & worked in rich and poor areas. She was dismayed how many rich ppl put Fluffy down rather than get x-rays or a cast.
-
Many rich ppl consider animals just another disposable thing they own. They'll sell a car over a dent and put down a pet over a fracture or flu. It's disgusting. (At least with poor ppl you understand "can't afford it." With rich ppl there's NO excuse. Just apathy & greed.)

It pains me to think vets would kill a treatable cat (although some vets refuse to and will have the owner sign over the cat and re-home her/him). Affluent people who can afford vet treatment but won't make my blood boil. I'd live on noodles before I'd deny treatment to my cats.

Hmm, pet parents face astronomical medical costs too, so it works both ways-and some veterinarians guilt people when they decide to euthanize an animal because the medical costs are prohibitive. Why do you think there are so many medical gofundmes for animals?
-
That’s a fair point. With my pup we maxed our CCs to try and save her life. We were about to start a gofundme to cover the next steps in tests and care but she passed right before. The costs were unreal for a lot of “inconclusive”.
-
Yes! Vets will exploit that love encouraging really expensive treatments. Happened to me too my old lab mix had cardiomyopathy, I paid 1000s to keep her alive for 2 extra years, did without for myself-then 6 months after she died he did a renovation of his building..go figure.

I’ve never run into a “scammy” vet but I know they exist. Even the vet we went to for my dog, she was trying her best and seemed unsure of what to suggest bc she knew the costs were high to pursue and it was possible that our dog was terminal.
-
Honestly I’m not sure it falls quite into the scammy category, but playing on peoples’ emotions does exist to varying degrees. I took a cat with mangled leg to one vet insisted they could save it for $4000. , another vet said ridiculous the leg has to be amputated which was 500.!
-
I guess I have run into vets like that... actually every profession has that. It’s a tough spot for all of us because the good vets have to deal with the vets perpetuating that stigma and patients and families just want affordable care.

Don't forget veterinary staff too. There along for the same ride except they only make 10 bucks an hour.

How do you think we feel?
-
And how do you think veterinarians feel about that?
-
'Moral distress' the article says. We think they feel that. Because the article says that... We don't get your question...
-
We agree then, the article is about how vets feel.
-
We were suggesting that we feel bad about this too... As the animals this is happening to...
-
I don't disagree that pets are unwitting participants in this unfortunate situation. But I think more fruitful discussion would come from discussing how we can help vets and pets through these difficult circumstances rather than one upping each others feelings.
