In the early 90s, Sears owned the Discovery Card, the largest stake in CompuServe, and the Catalog shipping infrastructure. They had all the pieces to be the first online megastore, a decade before Amazon, but not the vision.

It seems like the inevitable end of what has been a downward spiral. It has implications for brick-and-mortar that In an online world is struggling to compete.

It’s time Sears, RIP. Thanks for the memories, but like many other stores from our past, you’ve more than past your usefulness. As with others, I blame Walmart for the demise of the American shopping experience.

A vulture venture capitalist put the final nails in the Sears coffin. Predatory hedge funds destroy businesses and jobs.

Let's update this story a bit. Back in 2004 Sears was already hurting. In a merger with KMart, the new Sears Holding Company was formed and purchased Sears' assets. "Kmart"/Sears was born.

Radio guest said they tried to be too highfalutin. Seems like that's the down fall of a lot of "Discount" stores. So sad. I will miss Sears.

Sucks but not surprising. The thing that killed Sears is the sheer lack of effort placed into making the stores appealing. Drab stores, bad customer service, ever decreasing employees, lack of deals- even if you preferred brick-and-mortar Sears was such a drag to shop in.

This is vulture capitalism. Bought by a hedged fund, stripped of assets and deliberately run into the ground, so the CEO could massively profit.

The quality of their mowers, and I suppose everything else, has gone way down. There was a time I bought all appliances from Sears (Kenmore) but not for many years now.

I lament those working the front lines& hope they find employment quickly. As for Sears itself good riddance, it became a soiled shadow of it's former self. Anyone who tried to collect on their warranties were stonewalled and ripped off and I say this from personal experience.

Good riddance. They had so many years to change their ways and become a store worth visiting again, but no that would have been too easy.
