This has brought me to tears just now. I’ll never forget where I was when the news broke and vigils were gathered for Matthew, after the disgusting, vile, revolting act that took his life. My world changed and my perspective sharpened — accepting the growing #LGBTQ+ family.

I read this earlier. I have visited the space where Matthew will be interred. He will be among giants. I am also relieved that his parents don't have to be concerned that his grave will be desecrated or vandalized. They now have the peace they deserve.

The abject evil of the deaths of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd will never be excised from my memory. I have counseled many young people about the obligation to stop others from committing such heinous acts - no matter what the risk is to oneself.
