Here’s a crazy notion - Parents - do your job and teach your children about consent and healthy relationships - and model healthy relationship in your life - this IS NOT the schools job!

Agree, but if they are going to talk about sex in health class consent should be where they start.

Because "how to treat others" shouldn't be something you talk about once in a classroom and done. It should be an ongoing conversation with our children at home and at school starting when they're toddlers and continuing until they're adults.

They already do at our schools in MD.

Love our public school teachers who wrestle with these difficult issues & help teach age-appropriately!

How can we not teach consent? This seems as basic as don't murder and don't steal.
-
Have you ever tickled a kid past when they said to stop? That’s the most common example. From there are all the parents who force children to hug or kiss relatives to be “respectful”.

Uh, yeah. We have a terrible understanding of consent and it’s made even worse during adolescence.

YES! The public message that is being sent to the youth of today by Senators and leaders is that it does NOT matter what you do as a teen as long as you are a ‘good civil servant’ thereafter. That is WRONG.
#BelieveSurvivors -
Exactly. But if those leaders are sending the message that consent doesn't matter, what difference does it even make what we tell our kids. :(

A constant conversation we have with our teenager. I guarantee you these percentages are very low compared to reality. Despite our Senate GOPs belief, even us tough, outspoken girls don’t talk about the assaults we endure.

1.Discussions about consent need to start early and be reinfoced throughout life. It is important to reduce occurence of events and reaffirm to survivors what is/has happened is wrong. Family, faith, and education all have roles and responsibilities.
-
2. The % difference by gender in assaults explains a lot about yesterday. 3. The percentages are probably higher for both genders due to under reporting.

We need to stop presuming kids are just going to figure it out. Consent, sex ed, and just general nuances of communication should be continually taught as a child grows, and it should have a dedicated curriculum.

Why is this even a question? Of course they should teach it. I’ve taught the word consent to my 10 year old son since he was 2! No shit. He gets it. It’s like the hot stove- hands off kiddo or you’ll get burned! Teach consent. Teach respect, love & lead with kindness.

It should absolutely be taught by everyone in the community including parents. Many kids don’t have parents around to teach them, anyone else teaching consent only helps creat a society with a healthy culture.
