If you want to explore beyond Mars, it’s too expensive to rocket everything for the missions from Earth. You’ll need interplanetary gas stations on asteroids or the moon. Enter space mining.https://n.pr/2IeddB8

Nope. This is a common mistake. We don't travel point to point in space. We throw our spacecraft from a moving target to a moving target. So, depots likely not to be anywhere along the flight path. Lunar resources could be useful, but will add cost/complexity. Reason for that 1/2

Also very aware that planet to planet trajectories are curves. Even if/when constant acceleration (non-ion) propulsion systems come out, the curves will be somewhat straighter but it’s still a curve.

        2) Not the 1st such instance. WaPost did this when SpaceShip One “exploded”. Had a serious back & forth with them about aerodynamic instability @/near Mach 1 & that the crash site photos showed an intact fuel tank. They made the correction.

I wrote a series of posts about our evolving ideas about how to get to distant places in space - http://spaceflighthistory.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-challenge-of-planets-part-one-ports.html … - http://spaceflighthistory.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-challenge-of-planets-part-two-high.html … - http://spaceflighthistory.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-challenge-of-planets-part-three_22.html … - all this dates from early 1960s.

Think primitive nuclear-powered space crafts powered by some unfortunate soul in denim bibs, shirtless & covered in sweat, using a pitchfork to shovel uranium into a reactor.
