Octopi

Thank you. Octopuses was annoying the life out that of me.
-
You are incorrect. Plural of octopus is octopuses or octopodes. Octopi is incorrect as it is applying Latin plural rules to a word of non-Latin origin (Greek)
-
Wow. Years of ingrained teaching is going to be hard to overcome. All that because of a mistake made long ago. Ugh. But thanks for the correction.

I made the same mistake for years but recently learned this from the book “The soul of an octopus” which I highly recommend!

It seems crude, but to imagine that with their completely different array of neural structures, the organism still responds to serotonin-impacting chemicals similarly to us is astonishing. 500M years apart and we’re not that different. Awww. I want a drug-addled octopus now.

Just imagine getting to be one of those scientists. Friend - "What did you do at work today, Gary?" Gary - "Gave ecstasy to a pair of octopuses and watched them hug it out." Friend - "My college guidance counselor sucked." Gary - "Pretty much..."
-
Wahaha. “Dude we get paid to do this” “Yeah. Science, bro!” *High-five*

Not sure what’s strange about a drug having its exact know effect on an animal
-
Bc its effect on a human is different than an octopus.
-
Doesn’t really sound like it based on this study
-
Err, Al, Papi... have you even researched the side effects in humans? The typical behavioural changes are pretty much exactly the same. "Higher pleasure from and desire for physical touch." https://drugabuse.com/library/the-effects-of-ecstasy-use/ …pic.twitter.com/Vy2djajQNX
-
I haven’t researched it no, but I meant that the results are surprising bc of such a different species than ourselves having similar results.
-
I haven't read the full study, but I didn't found anything regarding increased concentration/focus. That would've been interesting, tho I can't even imagine a liable way to test that. I guess they can try with Sharks next and check whether they'll get a similar response? :P
-
I think experiments on cetaceans would be more interesting to me, ie blue nosed dolphins.
-
In general, them being mammal related - yes. But if this or other other psychoactive drugs has similar or the exact same effects on different species, that would be quite significant. Of course, the adverse effects and reactions vary quite a bit, so "same/similar" would be
