I work in space planning for a mid-size company. Based on my experience, there’s no single office design that works great for everyone. App Developers like an open plan. Accounting folks need privacy. Marketing folks just need conference rooms. Build what works to get work done.

Always having to worry about bothering everyone nearby is counterproductive, especially when they need to be discussing work but have to leave their desk to do it.

Yeah, cause open office plans suck donkey balls. Cubicles are great because they let you focus on working, not having to deal with the co-workers you can't stand. They make face-to-face interaction special, not an uncomfortable enforced norm.

Not really surprising. Open office plans suck! Like being in a fishbowl all the time. You want to talk, even work related, it looks like you are screwing off.

Open office *OR* cubicles: everyone puts on headphones. You IM them to find out if you can talk to them, or just don't bother. Human interaction drops to near nothing. Yep, that enhances collaboration.

I could have predicted this. Even extroverts, who make up a relatively small portion of the population (most people are "ambiverts"), need time alone and away from people.
