To keep people with mental illness out of jail entirely, the U.S. needs a mental health system that destigmatizes mental illness "and is able to identify people at the very first onset of symptoms," says Richard Cho of the CSG Justice Center.https://n.pr/2DddyoR

We need to address disparity of funding that affects access to community based care. Counties/states cut funding and refuse to pay providers, demand more services for less pay, and release highest acuity levels directly to community in lieu of hospitalization

We need to diagnose mental illness and treat it of course, but to keep people with mental illness out of jail entirely? Not sure how plausible that is

Hospitals don’t have to be on a volunteer basis. There should be a distinction between you know what you’re doing jail and you don’t know what you’re doing jail.

Repubs dismantled mental health system, well, cuz caring for those, who can’t care 4 themselves, not in their DNA. Gun violence is mental illness with gun, given them by people screaming about second amendment. Movie-Grand Canyon, u don’t have that gun, were not having conversation

Because the system is completely broken, their main source of “help” is just pouring psychiatric medication onto someone struggling. The fire is lit, then they walk away “we tried”. Psychiatric sham

therapeutic homes for MI were shut down with promises of community care. nothing was provided to communities and many MI became homeless, unable to care for themselves. mentally ill are ignored or stigmatized. but not medically treated as needed.

My mom has been undiagnosed and untreated for I don’t know how many years and her behavior has caused a lot of damage but the crazy thing is, she’s been able to get away with literally lying about anyone that’s tried to report her and they were the ones wrongly misdiagnosed

From my experience dealing with family members, the systems are corrupt to the point where the very sick are never truly helped and they actually over diagnose/over medicate those that don’t need that kind of help, it’s actually hurting them.

Yes, but it would be the only way to be fair to a segment of the population that is frail and can fight for its rights. Besides, juts with the money for a war plane the US would pay for the treatment for most of the people who suffer mental problems.

Yeah, well, in Texas the do guiders closed the hospitals that cared for the severely mentally ill and now regularly dump them on the streets after 90 day involuntary commitment.

We use to have state run hospitals in my state. Until the repugs decided to shut them down so their rich friends could run private ones that just take the money and run. Cannot trust public funding of private business. Same with charter schools.
