Thousands of thicker, heavier beer bottles are popping up on store shelves across Oregon as part of the first statewide refillable bottle system in the country. Supporters are hoping it might catch on in other states, too.https://n.pr/2NgkNkq

Dunno. When I was a kid all of the pop bottles and beer bottles were refundable and refillable.

Pretty sure the returnable bottles back when I was a kid in the 60s & 70s that had 5 cent deposit, on both beer and soda pop bottles, were refillable. #notnewidea

All bottles for pop and beer use to be returnable and refilled. Not sure when and why they stopped doing it.

One reason is that they're a cockroach paradise in every grocery, gas station, and convenience store in the country. Another was that the cost both in dollars and in carbon of transporting empty bottles was often more than the cost of making new.

As kids, we'd search for refillable bottles along Lake Michigan shore to earn money for candy and soft drinks.
