Yesterday, a cold front through the Gulf of Mexico produced an unusually long (and long-lived) #RopeCloud, and it’s still there today! The cloud can be seen here in this 36-hour loop via #GOESEast, stretching from Yucatán to Florida and north into the Atlantic.

Mostly clear sky conditions have allowed us to look at the snowpack via satellite from the Jan 24-25 winter storm. Notice the drastic cutoff from Mena to Conway northeastward. Also, notice the lack of snow along the AR river valley across western AR. #arwx

It's so cold in parts of Canada that 's #GOESEast 🛰️ is perceiving surface temperatures as very cold cloud tops! Infrared imagery this morning shows these particularly frigid temperatures (-20° to -40° F) as bluish "clouds," while the real blue clouds are moving.
Infrared imagery via the GOES East satellite this morning shows a view of the northern U.S. and Canada. The ground in northern Canada is the same bluish color as some clouds moving next to it. Other clouds along the frame's edge are greenish-yellow. The base map is gray with white state and country lines. The NOAA logo is in the bottom left corner.

When it gets really cold, you can start to see the ground on infrared satellite imagery. Here's a couple of images (captured this evening) stitched together from our GOES geostationary satellites. The cold air is annotated in yellow to show you where the ground is showing up.

The sun finally rose in #Utqiaġvik, Alaska yesterday afternoon, for the first time since November 18, 2022. In this visible imagery from 's #GOESWest, you can see the arc of sunlight barely touching the city, where residents saw sunlight for just over an hour.

I spy 🧐 with my little eye a game of tic-tac-toe taking place over the Pacific! ⭕️ Just kidding, they are ship tracks! These clouds are formed when moisture in the atmosphere condenses around tiny aerosol particles from the exhaust of cargo ships traveling across the ocean.
